Thank you for your interest in the game! Before you get started writing that super awesome app, you should check out our FAQ and Rules page. Now, onto the nitty-gritty:

1. Apps are open on the 1st-7th of every month.
2. You may apply for up to 2 characters per app round.
3. Reserves and Applications are judged on a first-come, first-serve basis.
4. [Edit 11/30/2016] Applications are now capped at 20 apps per cycle. The received application page will be updated when we are nearing or have hit the cap. Any apps submitted while the received application page has less than 20 names on it will be considered valid.
5. You may apply for a character without a reserve.
6. Please copy the textbox in its entirety and fill out every field that applies to your character.
7. Respond to this post with either the full app in the comments, or a link to the app in a character journal.
8. Your comment title should be in the format of Character Name | Canon Name | Reserved/Not Reserved.
9. Apps must be complete at time of posting. If we find that a posted app does not have all required sections filled out, then the player will be notified and will have 24 hours to complete any blank sections. Any apps with missing sections after the 24 hour period will be rejected.
10. All comments are screened, we will not unscreen comments without player permission.
11. Our app process has three possible outcomes.

► Accepted: Congratulations, you've been accepted into Hadriel! Please read the acceptance notice carefully and follow the instructions therein.
► Revisions: Happens to everyone. We'll ask for revisions on any particular section if we need clarification or feel like there's not enough information to make a decision. We allow three days for revisions before the app is automatically rejected.
► Rejected: We will reject applications if we feel like the character breaks one of our app rules (listed in the FAQ section), if sections of the app are missing, or if we feel that too many revisions would be required to accept it. We will reject applications after the third revision request.

12. If your app has been rejected, you may reapply for that character in the next app round.
13. All app notifications will go out at the same time, after applications close.
14. The intro log will be posted on the 10th of each month.

History:

Presumably born and raised in America. Captain of the high school basketball team prior to the zombie apocalypse and initial leader of their group after. She worked with their coach to keep the others safe and in good spirits, even going so far as to cut off the coach’s hand and beat up a couple of military group members because they didn't want to hide in the safe zone. Which turns out to be smart because someone becomes a zombie in there and it goes to hell. Lots of gay moments happen between her and a girl named Kayla.

The team goes out to find more supplies and make a base at Ana Sophia’s house, where they come across more survivors of their school. Hotaru is initially attacked by a girl Elise, but the two eventually talk and become surprisingly close in a short amount of time considering no one else trusts Elise and thinks she's going to kill them in their sleep because she definitely threatened to do that. A horde finds the house and they sacrifice it in a fire to take out the zombies. Hotaru is one of the few to stay behind during the final luring and burning, nearly getting caught by a zombie, but Elise saves her by cutting off a chunk of her hair and pushing her to safety while confessing her love for her WHAAAT. They get Elise out and amputate her arm but conclude it might be too late, which isn't important yet because Elise’s brother Jörgen takes off with her into the night.

The basketball team and remaining members of the secondary group live in the forest for a while with Coach as their new leader since Hotaru was getting too stressed, but Hotaru leaves when Kayla gets sick with the flu and she wants to find medicine. Coach follows her and the pair meet up with Jörgen, who tricks them into helping him rob a place and attacks them along with Elise, who now has memory issues. When Hotaru comes to, she's being carried by her older brother Takao who was out of state. He takes her and Coach to his group’s base of operations. The Wolves initially welcome them and the others when they roll around, but the leader of the other big group of survivors The Crows institutes a trade ban on the girls.

Hotaru and Kayla become girlfriends and more random shenanigans occur until Hotaru goes to rescue some people in a dumb way and breaks her arm. She's brought to The Crows since they have the only surgeon available, who she attacks with a chair before he can tell her that he wants a truce. The truce happens anyway. Then Hotaru and Kayla go out to find Elise again -- at which point Hotaru comes to Hadriel, but -- Elise tries to push them away because she's a half-zombie and “broken”, remembering just enough to have some really complicated feelings. Hotaru and Elise also become girlfriends. It's good.

Some cute gay stuff happens after that, too, but that's just a small bit and after her canonpoint so w/e.

Personality:
Hotaru is the type that gets wrapped up in her own thoughts too quickly. Because she worries over every little thing, she makes assumptions of others before ever getting a chance to confirm things and has a hard time trusting anyone. Even within her group of friends, where love and trust is a priority to her, in addition to their survival, she creates best case and worse case scenarios on her own and frets until she’s become a shaken up soda bottle. In a piece of side art, Hotaru is associated with The Hermit tarot card, which represents a withdrawal from others but also a readiness to give knowledge to those who seek it. This fits in with Hotaru’s trust issues, as she's not opposed to the interaction with others but always keeps her walls up in the hopes of maintaining safety and, at times, authority. When people reach out, she welcomes any understanding that's offered, but is slow to make the first move herself.

To cover up her uncertainty and terror, Hotaru goes hard in on the capable leader aesthetic. When presented with situations where a sacrifice of some sort has to be made, she’s often the one volunteering, or if she's not assuring others she's capable of chopping off limbs, she’s stating the practicality of getting the horrible thing over with quickly. She feels responsible for the others, having been at the heart of their basketball team, and tends to forget her own childish nature by heaping on the assumption of expectations. Five days into the zombie apocalypse, Hotaru had killed seventeen zombies on her own, which was quickly followed by more zombies and a zombie dog. Everyone has to have a first kill, so the sooner the better, especially if it's something that isn't a split second necessity, and she presses this kind of mindset throughout her growth.

Of course, she can't deny for too long that she's still a child. One of the first missions in the comic is a trip to the locker room to pick up their casual, comfortable clothes again, which is followed shortly after by a raid on the mall or get whatever the team members’ hearts desire. She explains this as letting the others let off steam, but when reminded that she's a kid as well, she collapses into tears and demands every Dokémon card (ba dum tshh) the mall has to offer. She's awkward and impulsive with hobbies that give her joy, like any other teen, even when she pushes herself to forget that.

Even as a little girl, Hotaru went all-in on fighting problems. When her older brother was getting teased, she intervened by biting the ten-year-older bully in the arm. Hearing of her zeal embarrasses her now, but she's just as likely to go to the mat for any of her friends and family. This reckless determination gets her in trouble on more than one occasion, since often it means going out on her own because of some misguided perception of what a leader should be or acting before hearing the other side of the situation. Everything is meant to fall on her shoulders, in her mind. She factors in others’ limits before her own even as she holds steady on her worldview, which means that while she never breaks from her ways, she allows a bend every now and then if it means someone else can have it easier for a little while.

Whether in an apocalyptic situation or not, this gal’s competitive. She's easily motivated by the promise of a “gold point”, a system their basketball coach came up with where ten normal points nets you ice cream as a reward, but a gold point allows you to choose where the team eats. She's immediately energized by the mention of them, because even with a zombie-wrecked world without a lot of food options, she sees them as proof of ultimate prowess and improvement. That aspect of them was the real reason of her serious desire. It gets so out of hand that the other teammates have grown tired of her antics and participate in the competition mainly to stop her from achieving any more bragging rights. When forced to abandon even the chance of a win for a good cause, she hesitates slightly more than “not at all” and becomes visibly bothered at the memory, though she still finds it necessary and holds no real regrets over it. Still, while ambitious and having trust issues, Hotaru is shameless to the point of admitting her obsessive behavior and mistakes. She takes criticism, as long as it's not baseless, to heart and works to improve herself in that way, as well.

Flaws:
Gets trapped in own head and gets tunnel vision, which means she winds up ignoring others’ opinions in favor of taking on the responsibilities she perceives as being leaderly. Highly competitive.
She chopped off a man’s hand without his permission and killed a dog. A zombie dog, sure, but still a dog.
