1) There has been a little done on coding applications! For example, Chris from Until Dawn coded some emoji for the phones, and Rhys from Tales from the Borderlands made Pong, which are obviously both very useful things for an underground hellcave. The limit would be, as you said, pretty much the capabilities of a 2013-era smartphone. One thing to keep in mind is available technology, which makes things like GPS very difficult. But apps themselves are definitely something that a character with coding skills could create!
2) They could take things apart and try to use the component parts to build something. However, depending on the technology, what's inside might not be what the character expects to find. If you'd like a character to take something apart, definitely drop us a line and we'll let you know what they find! So far, no one has found any computers or anything particularly advanced.
3) Unfortunately, there's no Rosetta Stone-type artifact or device, so at the moment translating the alien books is essentially impossible. On top of that, there are quite a few different languages to be found, and a lot of them seem to have no similarities at all. Sorry!
4) Some of the shops that Hope supplies occasionally have writing utensils, so with some searching, chalk could be found! There is no way of avoiding your own guilty conscience for taking things without paying, however. The gods don't seem to understand the concept of currency and are paid in the delighted emotions you feel while getting totally wasted. You may be able to figure out a workaround by talking to the gods, however!
5) That would probably be up to you! Depending on the character's circumstances, we generally offer two options: one being that their condition is frozen/put on hold while they're in Hadriel, the other being that it continues and it's up to them to find a way to deal with it (such as asking the gods for help or finding another resident of Hadriel who can help them.)
